USTA Pacific Northwest Eyes Partnership with Spokane Public Schools and the City of Spokane in Together Spokane Initiative

Together Spokane Initiative to Increase Accessibility to the Sport of Tennis for the Entire Community

Spokane, WA, February 26, 2025 – The United States Tennis Association Pacific Northwest (USTA PNW), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is thrilled to explore a possible partnership with the City of Spokane, creating a shared vision to make year-round tennis more accessible, affordable and inclusive to the entire city while fostering a healthier and active Spokane community.

Based on years of community input and research, Together Spokane is committed to improving every Spokane neighborhood, maximizing $11 million in private funding and taxpayer investments to support five pillars: youth wellness, education and workforce development, public safety, arts & culture, and healthy neighborhoods & adult recreation.

This historic partnership proposal was shared recently by Dr. Adam Swinyard, Spokane’s Public Schools Superintendent, and Garrett Jones, City of Spokane’s Parks and Recreation Director.

As the governing body of tennis, USTA PNW has partnered with the City of Spokane and Spokane Public Schools for many years, making tennis opportunities more accessible to the public through community programs, seasonal job opportunities, and need-based scholarships.

USTA PNW plans to cultivate a more vibrant ecosystem by conducting after-school programs at all Spokane schools, equipping PE instructors to teach tennis in their classes, delivering tennis programs to all park court sites, and constructing a new public indoor tennis center at Shadle Park High School. These efforts will not only provide increased accessibility to the game of tennis but will also foster a healthier and more active community. To ensure no barriers to entry, USTA PNW will provide need-based scholarships to students and families.

Specific plans include building a year-round tennis bubble at Shadle Park, resurfacing existing courts to play like the US Open tennis courts, hosting PE classes and high school team tennis practices and matches at the Shadle Park indoor tennis center, and providing inclusive afterschool programs at Spokane elementary, middle and high schools.

“We are incredibly excited to potentially partner with Spokane Public Schools and the City of Spokane to provide greater accessibility to year-round tennis play opportunities,” said Matthew Warren, USTA PNW CEO & Executive Director. “These efforts will not only grow tennis but will foster a healthier and active community. We would be proud to support and contribute to the Together Spokane Initiative.”
