National Tennis Rating Program

What is NTRP?

Developed in 1978, the National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) is a classification system used to group tennis players by skill level. It identifies and describes general characteristics of playing ability, ranging from 1.5 — beginner, to 7.0 — touring professional.

USTA League play is typically offered for levels 2.5 through 5.0, helping ensure fair and competitive matches.

Above all, tennis should be enjoyable. Players tend to have the best experience when competing against others of a similar ability level.

How NTRP Ratings Work

Self Rating

Self-rating is a short questionnaire used to determine your starting NTRP level before joining USTA League or NTRP tournament play.

Dynamic Rating

A dynamic rating is generated at the conclusion of a player’s most recently completed USTA League Adult and/or Mixed Division match. It is not published and may change as additional matches are played.

Year End Rating

Players receive a year-end rating by completing at least three valid matches in USTA League or NTRP tournament play. These official published ratings reflect performance over the rating year and determine eligibility for future play.

NTRP Rating Appeals

Self Rate Appeals

Request a change to your self-rating if it does not accurately reflect your level of play. Appeals must be submitted before playing a match, or after at least two matches have been completed.

Medical Appeals

Medical appeals are considered for players with a permanent injury or illness seeking to move to a lower level of play. Required forms and USTA medical appeal guidelines are available in League resources.

Year End Rating Appeals

Eligible players may appeal their year-end rating through TennisLink. These appeals are processed automatically based on USTA criteria, with immediate decisions and no further avenue for appeal.

ITF World Tennis Number

What is WTN?

The ITF World Tennis Number (WTN) is a global rating system that uses match results to calculate weekly singles and doubles ratings. While USTA League eligibility is based on NTRP, results from USTA events also contribute to a player’s WTN.
